10. Tools for Proposers
In this chapter, we list the tools and files available for proposal planning and proposal feasibility. For the most up-to-date information, please visit:
https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/xrism/proposals/xrism_tools.html
- WEBPIMMS: The standard HEASARC tool is available for estimating count rates and Resolve branching ratios. LINK
- WEBSPEC: This standard HEASARC tool supports XRISM spectral simulations.
- VIEWING: This standard HEASARC tool can be used to determine target visibilities for XRISM based solely on Sun avoidance.
- XRISM ROLL ANGLE: The XRISM Roll Angle tool calculates the range of spacecraft roll angles at which a given celestial target can be observed.
- DATE/TIME CONVERTER:
The standard HEASARC xTime tool converts XRISM time to other time systems and formats, and vice versa.
- XSPEC: Spectral fitting software package. XRISM Cycle 3 response files to be used alongside XSPEC simulations as well as NXB spectrum are available at:
https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/xrism/proposals/responses.html
Note that these response files are not compatible with the HEASIM tool (see below).
- HEASIM: Spatially resolve spectral/imaging simulation package an event file, useful for more involved science cases, e.g. spatial-spectral mixing. Files supporting HEASIM as well as complete and step-by-step guides adapted to XRISM proposals are available in the proposal XRISM Proposal Tools webpage introduced in the beginning of this chapter. Note that the HEASIM support files should only be used with this tool and not for other purposes. A walk-through is provided in Section 7.3.
- SKYBACK: A tool to simulate sky X-ray background.
- SXSBRANCH: A tool to calculate the spectrometer branching ratio and select events from HEASIM event files with a particular grade. (Details in Section 7.3).
- XSELECT: A tool extract spectra from event file. Can be ysed alongside HEASIM to generate mock spectra from simulations event files. (Section 7.3)
