Hera Setup Instructions for PCs running Microsoft Windows
These instructions apply specifically to Windows XP, but the setup
procedure should be similar for earlier versions of Windows.
We currently do not recommend using the Internet Explorer web
browser because the setup procedure can be significantly more
complicated. Firefox, or Mozilla, or Netscape are much easier
to configure.
Instructions for Firefox, Mozilla, or Netscape web browsers
-
Download and install the small
standalone version of Fv.
You must have version 4.3 or higher.
It is recommended that it be installed in the default
location at "C:\fv\bin\fv.exe".
-
Click on this
'Test Hera'
link and carefully follow these instructions:
-
a brower window should appear that
asks what you want to do with files of type XHERA or text/x-hera.
-
Select the "Open with" option, and use the "Browse" or "Choose" button to find
and select the previously installed fv.exe file.
-
Also select the option box
to always do this automatically the next time a file of this type is
opened, if your browser provides that option.
If these 2 steps have been performed successfully, then clicking on the above
'Test Hera' link will display a new window confirming that you have
successfully setup fv to run Hera.
If for some reason you need to reset the path to the fv executable,
follow these instructions, depending on your browser:
Return to the Hera Home Page.
Instructions for Internet Explorer (not recommended)
-
Download and install the small
standalone version of Fv.
You must have version 4.3 or higher (Version 4.2 will NOT work).
It is recommended that it be installed in the default
location at "C:\fv\bin\fv.exe".
-
Start "Windows Explorer", or "My Computer". Under Tools -> Folder Options -> File
type, click on "New" and enter "xhera" in the File Extension entry box,
and then click on "OK".
-
Click the "Advanced" button, (or first click the "Restore"
button, then the "Advanced" button).
-
In the "Actions" panel, click "New" and enter "open". (Or, if "open"
already exists, just select it then click on "Edit").
-
Select "Browse..." and find and select the fv executable file
(by default it is in "C:\fv\bin\fv.exe". Then click "OK".
-
In the "Edit File Type" window, unselect the "Confirm open after
download" option, then click "OK".
-
Close the "Folder Options" window.
-
Restart Internet Explorer, and click on this
'Test Hera'
link.
If everything was configured correctly, this should display a new window confirming
that you have
successfully setup fv to run Hera.
-
If you see a window asking "Do you want to open or save this file?",
then unselect the "Always ask before opening this type of file" option
and then select "Open".
If this set up procedure was unsucessful, there may be conflicting entries in the
Windows Registry,
especially if older versions of fv were previously installed on the same machine,
To fix this,
-
Click the Windows "Start" button in the system tray,
select "Run...", enter "regedit" and click "OK".
-
Scroll to the top of the left-hand window and click on "My Computer"
-
Press the "F3" key ("Find" short-cut key) and enter "fv.exe" in the
"Find what:" entry box.
-
In the righthand regedit window, under the
"Data" column, look for any occurances of an incorrect directory
path to the fv.exe program. (This could occur if fv was previously
installed in a different directory).
-
Correct any
incorrect entries by double clicking on the "Name" column to the left
of the incorrect "Data" column entry, then edit the string to
have the correct path.
-
Continue pressing the F3 key to
search though the entire registry, fixing any other incorrect
references to the location of the fv executable.
Return to the Hera Home Page.
