THE X-RAY TELESCOPE

 

The X-ray telescope (XRT) on ROSAT consists of the following subsystems: X-ray Mirror Assembly (XMA), Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) and High Resolution Imager (HRI). The following sections describe the performance of the individual subsystems; information on the performance of the overall system in its XMA+PSPC and XMA+HRI configuration can be found in Chapters 10 gif and 11 gif.

A schematic view of the XRT and its various subsystems is shown in Figure 4.1 gif. The magnetic deflector serves to significantly reduce any flux of soft electrons in the focal plane. A so-called South Atlantic Anomaly Detector (SAAD; not shown in Figure 4.1 gif) is used to monitor the local charged particle environment in orbit.
