Installation

It is recommended that you first install fv on your machine and then follow along by repeating each step in this tutorial. Alternatively, you can get an overview of fv just by reading through this tutorial and studying the snapshots of the various fv windows that are included.

Versions of fv are available for most UNIX workstations and for Windows 95, 98, and NT machines from http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/. Follow the simple installation instructions provided on that web page. There is currently no version for Macintosh computers, but one should be available by mid to late 1999.

A few sample FITS files are included with fv and are located in the `samples' subdirectory under the main fv installation directory. These sample FITS files will be used in the following tutorial.
