New issues from Xspec 12.11.1

Frequently Asked Questions

List of currently outstanding issues.

Note!!: A bug in the heasp library is causing plotting problems in XSPEC for cases where EBOUNDS energies are grouped and listed in descending order of energy (as often used for gratings). The patch fix for this is not currently integrated into the XSPEC patch fixes below. But it is available separately and can be easily applied FROM HERE.

Patches

Latest update 12.11.1d (Feb 24, 2021)

Requires patch installer v4.13

To apply patches, you'll need to have downloaded and already built the source code distribution of XSPEC. For details about the patch installer including options available with the latest v4.13, click here. Otherwise, follow the instructions below.

Note: This assumes you have already set your HEADAS environment variables with the headas-init script, as you would if you were running XSPEC.

To make sure your XSPEC installation is up to date with ALL listed patches:

  1. If you don't already have the patch installer tcl script (v4.13), download and place it in the XSPEC src directory. This directory should be at heasoft-[ver]/Xspec/src from the source code distribution.
  2. Download the latest patchfile into the same directory. There is no need to unzip/untar the patchfile since the installer will do that.
  3. At the command line, launch the script by typing 'tclsh patch_install_[ver].tcl', and that's all.

The script should detect which patches you've installed previously, copy the new code files to the necessary directories, determine whether complete or only partial rebuilds are necessary, and finally perform the rebuilds. Numbers listed in red indicate that the patch modifies the interface to one or more of XSPEC's libraries. These patches will generally cause longer rebuilds. If you have a local model library, it is recommended (though not always necessary) that you rebuild it with initpackage after applying red patches.

12.11.1a The nsx model now includes a spectral table for Hydrogen in addition to Helium and Carbon. To use, set the par5 switch according to:
Switch Element log g (cm/s^2) log T_eff E (keV)
1 H 13.6 - 15.0 5.5 - 6.7 0.03 - 15
2 He 13.6 - 14.9 5.5 - 6.7 0.03 - 15
6 C 13.6 - 15.3 5.9 - 6.6 0.01 - 15
Report added on Aug 31, 2020.

This patch modifies Xspec/src/spectral/modelData/nsx.fits

12.11.1b Xspec may crash during a fit if one of its loaded spectra has all of its channels ignored. Our thanks to Gabriella Alvarez for pointing this out. Report added on Sep 16, 2020.

This patch modifies Xspec/src/XSStat/ChiSquare.cxx

12.11.1c This patch fixes a bug when checking the format of a OGIP file. Our thanks to Ruben Farinelli for calling this to our attention. Report added on Nov 20, 2020.

This patch modifies Xspec/src/XSModel/DataFactory/OGIP-92aIO.cxx

12.11.1d The gadem and vgadem models have a factor of 2 error in their normalization. Our thanks to Wei Sun for reporting this. Report added on Feb 24, 2021.

This patch modifies Xspec/src/XSFunctions/vgaussDem.cxx
