set datamode

This sets the datamode. This has several effects. Some datamodes need special settings, (e.g. ASCA SIS fast, or ASCA GIS MPC mode), which are not set by set instrument. If a datamode is set, make obscat will filter on datamode. The datamode controls the grouping of spectra in the save spectrum command. Also, Xselect can do the appropriate preliminary analysis if the datamode is correctly set. For instance, if you read in FAINT mode data, the EXTRACT command will now run FAINT first, if you have not done so already...

This being said, except for filtering the obscat, it is not necessary to set the datamode yourself, since Xselect will set it when you READ or CHOOSE data files.
