This is an artist's conception of the EXOSAT satellite. In this picture, it is possible to see the instruments it carried. On the front from left to right, shown are two imaging low-energy telescopes (LE), four quadrants of the medium-energy experiment (ME) and the gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC). To the left of the LE's are the two star trackers. The two erected flaps protected the LE and ME during the launch phase and were opened in orbit to act as sun shades for the telescopes.
