NICER Cycle 4 Guest Observer Proposals Top Prior-year Totals

In response to its 4th call for proposals requesting observing time on a variety of targets, NICER received 107 Guest Observer (GO) submissions before the November 10 deadline. With 415 unique Principal and Co-Investigators hailing from 29 countries (see Figure), the Cycle 4 GO proposals cover 278 astrophysical targets across a handful of categories including neutron stars, black holes, and normal stars in our Galaxy; supermassive black holes in distant galaxies; and even comets within our own Solar System. The total exposure time requested was 14 million seconds, representing a 2x oversubscription rate, and 61 of the proposals requested "target of opportunity" time triggered by other facilities or NICER monitoring observations. Student thesis projects make up 31 of the submitted proposals.
