Guide to the XRISM first Key Program call for US- and Canada-based Proposers
1. Overview
The XRISM project announces the launch of Key Programs, and invites proposals from researchers worldwide. The aim of Key Programs is to generate legacy data and scientific results of broad value to the astronomical community through the execution of strategic, large-scale observation programs. Observations for the first Key Programs are scheduled to begin in June 2027, with an allocation of approximately 3 Ms of observing time. Please note that data obtained through Key Program observations will be made publicly available to the community without an exclusive access period. For details regarding the program, application guidelines, and updated science objectives, please refer to JAXA's Call for Proposals. 2. Deadline & SubmissionProposals are due no later than December 3, 2026, at 6:59 pm Eastern Standard Time (8:59 am on December 4, Japan Standard Time). Proposal submission is via the ARK/RPS system at ISAS/JAXA. It will be opened for submission in mid-October, 2026. ARK/RPS versions at NASA and ESA will not be open for Key Program proposal submission. ARK/RPS at JAXA will require a separate account creation for proposers who use NASA or ESA systems to submit regular proposals. 3. Key Program helpdeskQuestions regarding the Key Program call should be submitted using a dedicated helpdesk at JAXA. 4. Financial supportNASA plans to offer financial support to US-based investigators of successful Key Program proposals. Details will be announced at a later date. 5. ResourcesThe Cycle 3 POG, response files, and proposal planning tools are suitable for preliminary planning of Key Program observations. However, Key Program proposals will be required to use updated responses and/or follow updated simulation guidelines due to potentially significant changes in the instrument configuration. These are expected to be available mid-October.
