The FIT subroutine minimizes c2 using a modified version
of Bevington's CURFIT subroutine.
Data reduction and Error Analysis for the Physical Sciences,
published by McGraw-Hill in 1969,
is an excellent introduction to statistics.
Anyone interested in a detailed understanding of how CURFIT works
should consult this book.
- Uncertainties in parameter values are estimated
using the method described in
``Parameter Estimation in X-ray Astronomy'',
by M. Lampton, B. Margon, and S. Bowyer,
in Astrophysical Journal (1976) 208, 177.
The spline is computed by solving equation 3.3.7 in the 1988 edition of
Numerical Recipes, by Press, Flannery, Teukolsky, and Vetterling.
