The FIT subroutine minimizes c2 using a modified version of Bevington's CURFIT subroutine. Bevington's book Data reduction and Error Analysis for the Physical Sciences, published by McGraw-Hill in 1969, is an excellent introduction to statistics. Anyone interested in a detailed understanding of how CURFIT works should consult this book.
