Dear Colleagues,
We’re excited to announce the launch of the
XMM-Newton Data Analysis Video Tutorials Webpage. Our new resource for learning how to analyze XMM-Newton data using the latest tools and cloud-based platforms.
Available here:
HEASARC: XMM-Newton Video Tutorials
Whether you're a student, early-career researcher, or experienced user looking to sharpen your skills, this tutorial series provides step-by-step guides through many aspects of the data
analysis workflow – from data access and calibration to spectral extraction and high-resolution timing studies.
What’s Included in the Tutorial Hub?
Absolute Beginner’s Guide to XMM: Get a clear introduction to the XMM-Newton mission and its core instruments (EPIC, RGS,
and OM). Learn how X-ray photon event data is collected, structured into ODF and PPS files, and prepared for scientific use. Perfect for first-time users.
Introduction to SciServer and pySAS: This hands-on tutorial walks through logging into SciServer, launching a compute container,
using JupyterLab notebooks, applying cookbook methods, and managing storage. Ideal for working with XMM data without installing SAS locally.
XMM-Newton Data Analysis Workshop Series: A two-day NASA and ESA workshop featuring live demos and expert instruction, now
available in full:
Day 1: Foundational Tools & Remote Analysis
·
Introduction to pySAS in Jupyter notebooks
·
Using SAS in SciServer and ESA Datalabs
·
Spectral extraction using EDL
·
RGS high-resolution spectroscopy techniques
Day 2: Advanced Techniques & Synergies
·
ESAS workflows for diffuse emission
·
Timing mode and pile-up correction
·
Optical Monitor data analysis
·
Source detection pipelines in SAS
·
XMM-Newton and XRISM collaborative science
Presentation slides are also available for download alongside the videos.
