Within this AO-22 a new call to submit proposals for observations to be performed with the XMM-Newton observatory will be issued. To be prepared for this, please find below the anticipated timeline: Announcement of Opportunity 17 August 2022 Due date for Proposals 7 October 2022 (12:00 UT) Final OTAC approved programme mid December 2022 For approved proposals only: Start of Phase II proposal submission 10 January 2023 Closure of Phase II proposal submission 3 February 2023 Start of observations May 2023 The official "Announcement of Opportunity" will be made public in the [5]XMM-Newton News and on the [6]XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre Home Page. Let us know about XMM-Newton related Ph.D. and prizes for XMM-Newton results As already announced in previous issues of this Newsletter, the XMM-Newton team is collecting information about the completion of doctorates and Ph.D. theses based on (or making use of) XMM-Newton observations. We would appreciate if you - being a candidate or a supervisor of a doctorate - could let us know details through the page [7]https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmos.esa.int%2Fweb%2Fxmm-newton%2Fphd-theses&data=04%7C01%7Cxmmnews%40lists.nasa.gov%7C655017a0ac69424f19cf08d9e58ae210%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637793206924306870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=FR%2BqfgM1AR5q37UGmub3TTIQihrrIrSx%2ByhdtLOK%2FN4%3D&reserved=0 Also, we would be grateful if you could inform us (via a message to [8]xmmhelp@sciops.esa.int, with subject "Ph.D. thesis work") in case you are aware of theses from, or supervised by, colleagues that make use of XMM-Newton data but are not yet included in the above list. Workshops announcement: Spectral/Timing/Polarimetry properties of AGN: Theory and observations of the inner workings in these objects SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES AT HIGH REDSHIFT These two workshops will take place in the framework of the [9]COSPAR 44th Scientific Assembly, from 16 to 24 July 2022, in Athens (Greece). Spectral/Timing/Polarimetry properties of AGN: Theory and observations of the inner workings in these objects The main aim of this event is to bring together both theorists and observers, and to review the latest advances in the field of physics of AGN, including: * X-ray spectral/timing properties of AGN * X-ray polarimetric observations of AGN * X-ray corona properties and modelling * the disc/corona interplay and recent multi-wavelength campaigns * X-ray reflection and disc thermal reverberation * the nature of the 'soft excess' * the nature of the inner accretion flow in AGN Supermassive Black Holes at High Redshifts Optical and near-IR surveys are exploring very efficiently supermassive black holes (SMBH) at high redshifts, and follow-up mm-observations, e.g. with ALMA, are offering an unprecedented view of the physical properties of their host galaxies. Optically selected AGN, however, may only form the tip of the iceberg as they are prone to obscuration. X-ray surveys represent the perfect tool to peer through obscuration and discover these hidden SMBH. The situation is rapidly changing with the serendipitous XMM and Chandra catalogues and certainly with the eROSITA all-sky survey. This meeting will bring together the results coming from current optical and X-ray surveys, and from observations with state-of-the art mm and radio interferometers, trying to define solid paths for the future JWST, ATHENA, Lynx and AXIS surveys. Further details are given in the events Web pages: [10]https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cospar-assembly.org%2Fadmin%2Fsession_cospar.php%3Fsession%3D10&data=04%7C01%7Cxmmnews%40lists.nasa.gov%7C655017a0ac69424f19cf08d9e58ae210%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637793206924306870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=vuYTr3I5nLk0%2FpVFlKyTEid4h35XaAXqzJwlcKLgWNk%3D&reserved=0 65 [11]https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cospar-assembly.org%2Fadmin%2Fsession_cospar.php%3Fsession%3D10&data=04%7C01%7Cxmmnews%40lists.nasa.gov%7C655017a0ac69424f19cf08d9e58ae210%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637793206924306870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=vuYTr3I5nLk0%2FpVFlKyTEid4h35XaAXqzJwlcKLgWNk%3D&reserved=0 70 Call for a Medium-size and a Fast mission opportunity in ESA's Science Programme The ESA Director of Science solicits the scientific community in ESA's Member States for proposals for both a "Fast" mission opportunity (to be launched in the 2030-2031 timeframe) and for a Medium mission opportunity (to be launched around 2037). The new long-term scientific plan Voyage 2050, for the Science Programme of the European Space Agency, has been issued in June 2021. The plan includes three Large (L) missions in selected science themes (Moons of the Giant Planets, From Temperate Exoplanets to the Milky Way, and New Physical Probes of the Early Universe) and a set of Medium (M) and Fast (F) missions. The definition of the F and M space missions is based on a competitive, peer-reviewed selection process. Even though the Voyage 2050 plan identifies a set of possible themes for the Medium missions, proposals in all fields of space science will be considered, with no prejudice. The deadline for receipt of Phase-1 proposals is 12:00 (noon) CET on 14 February 2022 Full information can be found at [12]https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmos.esa.int%2Fweb%2Fcall-for-missions-2021&data=04%7C01%7Cxmmnews%40lists.nasa.gov%7C655017a0ac69424f19cf08d9e58ae210%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C637793206924306870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=PEtpYOjMD30RGIIW8ANPeWOHsUgL83e1yxMJ4hC%2Fens%3D&reserved=0 XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre at ESA’s European Space Astronomy Centre, Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid, Spain [13]SOC Home [14]Helpdesk Web Interface [15]Contact Helpdesk [16]Newsletter Archive This message is intended only for the recipient(s) named above.
